I have heard about the endless sunshine on the Californian coast. However today sitting at the local coffee shop in Newport Beach the sun is hidden well behind bleak grey skies with nothing but rain falling all day! Making this a perfect opportunity to sit inside warm and dry reflecting on the year so far. I have not ever written a “blog entry” however January of 2017 has a lot that I could write about so I’m going to start.
The beginning of the year was the usual Bay criteriums and National Championships in Australia, renowned for their hot dry conditions. I had been training for nationals over the previous months and was both pleased and left wanting more after this years races. I finished 2nd in the criterium championships behind Jessica Allen of Orica-Scott a result I was really pleased with. In the road race I ended up in 16th place. Not my best and not my worst result in this race. It was special however to be able have all the people who had helped me train not only for the race but are my main supporters standing on the road side cheering me on! Thank you!
One week after the Nationals was my departure to the United States for the season ahead. Not knowing when I would be home next or entirely what the year ahead holds for me I spent this week with family and friends riding for fun and making the most of the summer weather at the beach.
The blue skies and summer evenings were short lived upon touch down in Phoenix Arizona for the Colavita-Bianchi team camp. Most noticeably was the lack of daylight at 5pm. It was definitely winter in the northern hemisphere and out came the leg warmers and long sleeve Jackets. Despite the drop in temperature there was a warm buzz as our team came together for the first time. It was a jam-packed week of activities getting to know the 2017 team of staff, sponsors and riders.
With a few weeks until our first race together I took the time to visit my brother who lives here in California. The potential for good weather and training was an added bonus. It has been nice to be able to spend time with family in my first few weeks abroad.
Next stop is our first race together as a full team, Omloop Het Nieuswsbland in Gent, Belgium.
Until next time,
Let the good times roll.
