Edison, NJ- Colavita|Bianchi p/b Vittoria Women’s UCI Pro Team will come together in Carlsbad, CA for their winter team training camp and the official start of their 2016 season February 18-26th.
Team camp will be focused on outfitting the riders with the latest equipment, getting them set up on their Bianchi Oltre XR.1 Carbon Fiber frames and Bianchi Pico Crono time trial bikes. The riders will be able to spend quality time riding with their sponsors and local riders around the area. The camp most importantly will provide an opportunity for the riders to spend time together, interact and begin to gel as a family. Team chemistry is critically important to the Colavita|Bianchi team, and the team camp allows for the ladies to begin that important bond. The mission and focus of the Colavita pro cycling program has always been about fostering teamwork, group morale, determination, passion for the sport, and leadership by example in ways that will benefit and motivate up-and-coming female athletes and excite fans across the country.
Second year, Directeur Sportif, Mary Zider, has high expectations for her squad. Zider is excited about team camp as she stated, “Team camp is the most important block all season long. Bringing the ladies together for that initial bonding experience is vital to any team’s success. A team can have a bunch of all-stars and never get the desired results if there is not an opportunity to form that initial and enormously important bond. As a team we will spend quality time establishing our core values and committing to them individually and collectively, so we can begin our season in a way that will set us up for opportunities to be successful.
The new UCI women’s roster features returning riders from the 2015 team and several additions for the 2016 campaign including: Kimberley Wells – the 2013 and 2015 Australian National Criterium Champion. Wells is also a proven road racer in the European peloton. Many consider Wells to be one of the top sprinters in the world. Wells has kicked off the 2016 season taking the win at the UCI 2.2 Santos Women’s Tour – Stage 4. Also joining the team is rising US star Gretchen Stumhofer, who demonstrated her raw talent by winning the 2015 Collegiate National Champion in both the Road Race and Criterium. Gretchen was a guest rider for Colavita|Bianchi in 2015 and instantly made an impact, by out pacing many of the seasoned sprinters in the US peloton and putting the team on the podium in multiple NCC races. Australia’s Lauretta Hanson, who quickly experienced success and saw the podium many times this past season all while making a name for herself as one to watch in any race. Hanson has kicked off the 2016 season in the same fashion taking the sprinter and best young rider jersey at the UCI 2.2 Santos Women’s Tour and a podium finish in third place at the UCI 2.1 Tour of Qatar – Stage 3. 2015 Colavita guest rider from Great Britain, Emma Grant, who finished off the 2015 season with an impressive solo breakaway win at the Boston Mayor’s Cup will look to carry that momentum into the 2016 season as a full-time member of the team. Emma came from the triathlon world and converted her power and determination into road race success. Rounding out the 2016 additions is Beth Hernandez – a US Gold medalist at the Pan American Track Championships in 2013, and a World Cup silver medal on the track. Hernandez will refocus back to the road for 2016 and will be a very important piece of the team puzzle in many races.
Returning riders: Jessica Cutler, a proven leader who has a versatile all-around riding style and strong time-trialing ability; Kathryn Donavan, a pure climbing sensation and Whitney Schultz the ultimate all-around work horse, time trialist, and deadly breakaway rider return to help anchor the team with solid leadership and experience. Mary Zider will spend less time on the bike this year as she transitions into the role of full-time Director Sportif. “I’m very excited about our 2016 roster. Each rider brings something special to our team. You can expect to see these extremely talented athletes leverage and benefit from our collective experience, seasoned leadership and focus. We plan to accomplish team goals through a combination of unselfish teamwork, tactical excellence, hard work, persistence and a touch of creativity.”
During the 2016 season, the professional Colavita/Bianchi team will focus on the National Racing Calendar and domestic UCI road races. Race results, news and photos will be available throughout the season at www.TeamColavita.com and www.Facebook.com/TeamColavita.
